Natural Cycles
Divination deck, self growth oracle
As the owner of MindSoul Musings,
I have been offering in person, email tarot readings to local and international clients since 2003. I encourage my clients to develop their intuition in any way possible, yet most struggle with tarot, which is understandable given all the structure, symbolism and systems involved, from astrology and elemental dignities to suits and numerology. I had visions of creating my own deck, but couldn’t make it happen in a coherent way until I had a lot of down time during an arduous recovery from major surgery. I wanted a more free flowing, “pick it up and go” deck, based on the ebb and flow of the natural world, while staying true to the underlying systems. “What could be easier” I thought, “than using nature to share the core meanings of the cards? Anyone can look at a flower bursting into bloom, the sun rising in the morning, or rain pounding the roof and understand exactly what the image means, and what emotions it evokes. “ The deck came together in 2 months and I felt supported by Spirit during the process: each time I wondered how I would create one particular card using my nature photography, I was presented with the perfect image as I went for my daily walks, whether a lovely pastoral scene, cemetery sculpture, cloud pattern–even a peace-sign flag I saw at the beach when I was trying to conceptualize the image for the JUDGMENT card, which in the traditional Rider-Waite deck shows Archangel Gabriel blowing a trumpet while holding a banner, urging the masses to “wake up!” I wanted a deck that worked on a visual level, yet stayed as true as possible to traditional systems and meanings for those who want to take the images as a starting point and “dive in” to the underlying structures of tarot after they familiarize themselves with the basic imagery.
Below, I present my Natural Cycles deck, which blends splashes of my personality (and view of the world) to clients who have worked with me, family, friends, and the general public. This deck was incredibly fun to create: I went through my traditional Rider Waite deck rather systemically. Every few days, I picked a card to create, breathing in its energy on an emotional level before I searched my photo library for the right energetic fit image-wise. When I couldn’t find the right visual, I waited a few days till inspiration kicked in, or went for a walk, and bingo–I was gifted the right image at the right time. Keywords are included on the minor arcana (every day) cards but they are by no means inclusive; let your imagination and the image talk to you. Feel the energy of each card on a sensory level, creating your own set of meanings and associations rather than turning to various guidebooks, many of which contradict one another. Consistency is key. Yes, cards have various shades of meaning but let your own personal relationship with the card–how each image speaks to you or makes you feel–give you its meaning in the context of the focus question or spread. Then, when you have a relationship with the deck–your own set of personal associations–you can learn more about the underlying structure, which I have mentioned in the attached book, if it interests you.
This deck is organized a bit differently from other decks. Most tarot decks start with the MAJOR ARCANA, powerful spiritual or archetypal energies that depict the “Hero’s Journey” we all undertake from birth to death, then delve into the MINOR ARCANA, which are similar to playing cards with their focus on the more “mundane” aspects of life. This approach is based on the premise that is the powerful spiritual energy of the MAJOR ARCANA can trickle down to us on a daily basis, through the minor arcana. As I “awakened’ to my intuition in life–in my early forties– I decided o put the MAJOR ARCANA last, to show how mundane reality gives way to more spiritual awareness as we age, or go through profound life shifts. I also kept the COURT CARDS, the family of the tarot deck, separate from the MAJOR and MINOR cards as their energy differs from the nature photographs comprising the minor arcana, and the more abstracted spiritual energy of the MAJOR. The various formats and colors are meant to work together in a free flowing way, encompassing all the facets of life.
Let this deck attune you to your imagination, the bridge to your intuition, that “still small voice within” that knows everything and shares it with you once you learn how to access it. Tarot is a great way to learn more about yourself, others–and the world, to give you clarity about any subject you ask about. Let the imagery and colors of this deck inspire you to turn off your critical rational mind and delve into the visuals, letting them tell you a story. Each card contains an inspiring quote and short passage that focuses on the energetic vibration of the card, encouraging you to pick a card (or several) every day, to “see” where you that day in terms of growth, challenges, and lessons along with the actions you can take optimize your day. There are no rules; you can use this system in any way that works for you–that’s the fun of it! Enjoy!
(Please note that I am not a fortune teller. YES I feel that a few life events are “meant to happen,” but as I tell my clients, I am a big believer in free will. A reading shows us where we are now in space-time, and where we are headed if we stay on course. If a projected reading outcome is not what you want to see, you have options, including picking a new direction, changing your beliefs, letting go of what no longer serves us or reassessing your life to make better choices.. Of course, there are situations we can’t avoid, but knowing they are coming helps us to prepare, and shift our attitude, which can be our only source of “control”. A reading is not meant to tell you “what will happen” (although it can) but to empower you to take charge of your life by seeing the big picture through a new lens.
MINOR ARCANA CARD DESCRIPTIONS, by element
FLAMES (fire/wands in traditional decks): The FLAMES suit describes your inner fire, motivation and desire to create a better life for yourself and others. This suit is action oriented, requiring you to make an effort, leap upward, reach for goals, challenge yourself, and follow your intuition. FLAMES are always forward moving and linked to effort; they symbolize change, inner fervor, passion and optimistic action that impacts the physical world. Keywords are physical energy, action, intuition, vision, vitality, effort, motivation, and desire– going after what you want to make your life more fulfilling. The FLAMES cards focus more on the challenges involved in taking action than on tangible rewards. Flame personalities want to be inspired, fulfilled, challenged–to grow and expand. They want to feel vibrant, energized and alive. FLAMES are a traditionally masculine, go-getter suit; when a FLAME card shows up in a reading you know that things will not stay static; CHANGE is coming–or is required.

WEIGH OPTIONS
I've made a lot of choices, some good, some not so good;
how sad for those who merely hitchhike along, never
daring to choose at all.
― C.J. Heck
This path to the beach, rimmed with overgrown autumnal reeds, beckons you to the water. You may choose to sit in the sand, wade up to your waist, get your feet wet or dive in. Or perhaps you choose to take a left and walk along the shore, or to the right towards a distant lighthouse? The 2/FLAMES is all about decisions you have to make often within a partnership. It indicates a bit of a tug of water in terms of “what’s next” and often shows up when you feel bored or dissatisfied with the status quo, and wonder, “Should I stay put or move forward?” As what you moved towards in the 1FLAMES no longer seems like enough. The fiery ARIES energy of this card urges you to push out of your comfort zone–to take a risk and say YES to a new challenge that will lead to expansion and growth rather than complacency. It urges you to consider your options then set personal goals, thinking about what steps need to be taken to move forward towards a new goal yet it’s more about planning than action. Strategic thinking, decisions and negotiations are key here. You have the upper hand and have to decide whether to shape a new path before you, or ignore your inner fire and stay where you are, choosing non-action and acceptance of the status quo rather than take a risk. It also can indicate a willful partnership based on power/control dynamics, with lots of choices to make, some of them locational, including whether to stay, go, move into together, separate.

The 10/ FLAMES shows up when a goal has been reached. You may be proud of your efforts, yet you realize all the effort you expended, and how much more effort is needed to maintain what you have. You did it, yes, but at times, you feel more weary than jubilant, and may ask yourself “What was I thinking?” when I said YES to this path. Delegation is helpful when this card shows up. STAGNATION
Change is life. Stagnation is death. If you don't change, you die. It's that simple…
― Leonard Sweet
A small cottage reflected in a pond at an historic cemetery creates the illusion of a flood, or submerged property. The leafless tree next to the cottage and stagnant green water symbolize inertia. Lack of movement and stagnation. Stasis. The number four likes structure and stability, which contradicts the unrestricted, always moving energy of FLOW. The 4/ FLOW describes situations in which you get focused on building solid routines to “feel safe” only to get stuck in routines, closed of to growth. This is a very inward focusing, internal card that also can be linked to boredom or apathy-even depression. Sometimes we build a moat around ourselves, ignoring opportunities for “more life and growth” that we do not see as our eyes are closed, or focused inwardly. The 4FLOW is “in a rut” energy that is begging to be shaken up and brought to life again. Yes, it may be helpful to “go within” or meditate, but not to live there; it asks you return to life, to open to new sources of growth.
KEYWORDS: introspection, withdrawal, inner moat; boredom, stasis; insularity; disillusionment; self protection; meditation; stasis; stagnation; rut; apathy

LETTING GO
Some people believe holding on and hanging on are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.
― Ann Landers
Orange maple leaves float in puddle that reflects a leafless winter tree, reminding us autumn has arrived, with winter soon to follow. Change is the only constant. As much as we hate to face it, grief and loss–a need to let go–are part of our human journey. In the words of Queen Elizabeth II, “grief is the price we pay for love.” The 5/FLOW painfully reminds us that nothing is certain in the natural world–decay and entropy are part of the human condition (although Einstein’s Theory of Relativity reassures us that energy doesn’t die–it simply changes form.) This card warns you of loss. An ending. Very often, dashed expectations, disappointment and disillusionment are part of the equation. Acceptance of shifting energies is required–a need to let go of expectations, or attachments, trusting that we have the inner resources to handle what comes our way, and that nothing is ever lost if it lives in our heart.

ILLUSIONS
If we choose to, we can live in a world of comforting illusions.
We can allow ourselves to be deceived by false realities….
― Emily Thorne
A human face is discernible in a heavily moving current. Or is that an eye? Something else entirely? Is what you see in the blue waters real, or illusion? The 7 of FLOW speaks of creative visions and dreams that are enticing, but removed from reality. This card shows up in a reading when you are in a creative state, filled ideas, or overwhelmed with options, not sure which to choose. This card is great for creative projects, but warns against escapism, temptation and illusions that lead to confusion- “pie in the sky” energy that confuses truth with delusions. When this card shows up in a reading. you are asked to “make a choice” from the various visions presented–to follow through on the idea, rather than chasing a mirage or getting stuck in your head. It reminds you that what you think is real may be illusions, that the new path you want to choose may be “smoke and mirrors.” If these visions can be manifested. flesh them out; otherwise, be cautious.

It is not as much about who you used to be, as it is about who you choose to be.
― Sanhita Baruah
The shadowy roadway in this image gives way to sunlight, urging you to follow the metaphorical “yellow brick road” depicted, saying yes to a new adventure, even if you don’t know where the path leads–or where you will end up. You may wake up one day and realize you want “more life” as something is missing, even if you can’t figure out what. There may be nothing wrong with your situation, yet you feel unfulfilled. You may have detached long ago, and realize it’s time to move on. You have outgrown a person or situation and need to start over in some way. This card is soul quest energy, a bit like a pilgrimage in which you seek a Holy Grail, a missing part of you. Often, you will develop an inner yearning–a compulsion– to make a big life change that may seem inexplicable to yourself or others at the time, but is hard to ignore. The 8/FLOW encourages you to trust your intuition as you say yes to a a literal move or powerful inner journey. Sometimes this move is permanent; other times, you go away then come full circle, back to where you started on higher ground, aware that you have evolved. Of course, if you are on the receiving end of this energy, you may feel abandoned as though someone has left you “for no good reason” that they can understand.

LONG-TERM HAPPINESS
To quench the thirst for deeper love and stronger bonds, one must remember to laugh and love like a child.
― Jessica Marie Baumgartner

While a couple stands side by side focusing on the horizon, a girl in a pink jacket points excitedly towards a crescent moon while her brother studies the architecture of a nearby home. Captured in the pale water, their reflections indicate family harmony and joy. Together, they enjoy one another and the magic of the afternoon light. Although reflections are not true indicators of “reality’ energy, they appear to be enjoying themselves in the moment, grateful for their loving bond, and aware of their blessings. WIND
WIND (air): The WIND suit is anything but static. It can be an invigorating breeze, thunderstorm that clears the air, even a hurricane. It summarizes your mental energy, or “thinking mind” which can come up with incredible solutions on one hand, or cause inner torment and despair on the other. WIND is linked to thoughts, ideas, beliefs, plans, analysis, strategy, communications and problem solving. The WIND cards also are the source of many conflicts, arguments, obstacles and miscommunications; the traditional SWORDS in a traditional deck, they can eliminates problems through decisive action and careful planning or sow discord when we act rashly, in the ‘name of truth” without compassion, empathy or big picture thinking. WIND augurs challenges, problems and obstacles yet it is solution-oriented, using clarity and communications. It demonstrates the power of THOUGHTS in creating the life you want. Like FIRE, WIND is traditionally masculine in vibration, an ACTION oriented energy that requires careful planning rather than impulsivity. Like clouds, thoughts alone are little more than air, without form or substance.. They exist within the mind of the querent, and can change drastically, often moment by moment. They urge planning and action but they need to be grounded–to have a foundation built under them–to turn plans into action and avoid vacillation, harshness, and black and white thinking that harms and alienates rather than solves problems proactively..

CLARITY
It’s a lack of clarity that creates chaos and frustration. Those emotions are poison to any living goal.
― Steve Maraboli
A metal butterfly perches in window, basking in the light of the sunset as though jolted by sudden mental clarity–an idea, plan or inspiration; a solution to a longstanding problem. The 1of FLOW indicates a sudden a-ha moment or jolt of clarity amidst confusion. Like the sun piercing the early-morning darkness, a sudden solution arises from the basement of your mind. You suddenly have a plan–you know what to say or how to proceed. You make a sudden decision to act–to carry out an idea, have a tough conversation, or pull up the weeds of your life and start afresh. The 1 of FLOW urges honesty and clarity–cutting through problems and thorny situations with decisive action, which can seem sudden and harsh to those who are not expecting it. Yet action is needed. Empathy and compassion too.
INTERPRETATIONS mental clarity; power of thought; strategy; clear communications; solutions; honesty; decisions; drama; confrontation; solutions; plans; new ideas; victory; breakthrough; focus; truth; justice; assertiveness; decisions making; intelligence; intensity

STALEMATE
Sticking your head in the sand might make you feel safer, but it’s not going to protect you from the coming storm
-Barack Obama
A sandy path to the beach beckons you to the water’s edge while tufted bulrush wave in the breeze indicating conflicts or challenges–a need for “clearing the air” through communication or clear decisions you may not be ready to make. TWO is all about choices and decisions that will lead to harmony and peace but may be hard to make. The TWO OF WIND shows up when you are afraid of conflict or change thus stay the course–on the fence–often ignoring harsh externals or vexing inner confusion. You “shove down” your real feelings, which takes a lot of energy, detracting from your ability to live fully. At some point, a stalemate will be untenable–a decision will have to be made, which may be uncomfortable initially, but will lead to more lasting peace as you live authentically, following your truth and freeing ourselves from what no does not serve you.
INTERPRETATIONS: stalemate; indecision; neutrality; procrastination; delays; self protection; on the fence; in the middle; denial; avoidance; blocked emotions; tough decisions

HEARTACHE
Tears are words the mouth can't say nor can the heart bear.
― Joshua Wisenbaker
An attic window reflects a stormy autumn day, with rain pelting the glass–a tangled mass of dark bushes beneath a wind-tossed tree.
The 3 WIND describes sadness, heartache, loss and upsets that stem from externals, most often interference from a ‘third party”-sometimes a romantic rival, but also from work, family, meddling friends and relatives, upsetting news, separation due to work commitments– any external impetus that causes mental anguish, even bad weather! This is not a warm and cozy card, yet the hardship leads to increased insight–lessons learned. Wisdom. The 3 WIND also shows up in the midst of a betrayal, breakup, divorce, illness, loss or bad news. WIND is mental energy meaning that the heartache usually is in our thoughts–in what we tell ourselves. There is no bloodshed, yet the pain of this card is profound.
KEYWORDS: heartbreak, grief; mental anguish; separation; sorrow; painful truth; wisdom gained; face reality; betrayal; bad health; heart issues; misunderstandings

RESPITE
Taking a break can lead to breakthroughs.
― Russell Eric Dobda
A lone bench overlooking a river-way offers respite to anyone walking by. It showcases orange maple leaves that foreshadow winter, sharing one bit of last color before falling off. The FOUR WIND is a “time out” card that shows up when you are exhausted and need down-time. You can find your way back to ourself by taking a vacation, meditating and going within, relaxing in nature, enjoying the arts, even distancing yourself from a difficult situation for a bit–or for good. This card can indicate hospitals or sickness particularly when you are ignoring your needs, forcing our physical body to choose illness as a temporary way to get us to pause and relax. But mostly it’s a “pause and relax” card.
KEYWORDS: recovery; sanctuary; hospital; contemplation; counseling; regroup; respite; meditation; inaction; truce; time out; rest; take break; energy healing; therapy

DEFEAT
Somewhere in the world there is a defeat for everyone. Some are destroyed by defeat, and some made small and mean by victory. Greatness lives in one who triumphs equally
over defeat and victory.
― John Steinbeck
Menacing storm clouds threaten inclement weather, bearing down on peaceful path in a nature sanctuary. The message is clear–run, or face a storm. The 5 WIND shows up when someone–you or an opponent –wants to be right at all costs, using underhanded destructive tactics, even bullying to win. Yet there is no real winner here. A relationship is destroyed and the victory attained is hollow at best. This card warns you to expect difficulties, deciding whether you want to assert yourself no matter what, or surrender, walking away with your head held high. It warns of betrayal and defeat–an ugly ending to a situation that once held hope. If you assert yourself, you may win the battle, but not the war.
INTERPRETATIONS: defeat; betrayal; bullying; callous behavior; battles; no-win situation; disputes; sabotage/self sabotage; fight back; fight or flight
The moment that you start to wonder if you deserve better, you do.
-OurMindfulLife
A sailboat on sun-reflected seas heads out of clouds, towards sunshine and distant shore. It seeks improvements–escape–clarity. The 6 WIND describes a transitional stage in which we realize it’s time to leave a situation that is not good for us. At the very least to detach to find clarity. As WIND is linked to mental energy, this journey can be inward; typically it symbolizes a literal move or relocation–travel or journey by or over water. It indicates safe passage; spiritually it is linked to unseen helpers–relatives who have passed, ancestors, angels, spirit guides, accompanying us. When this card shows up, you are still in the midst of turmoil, yet determined to manifest a higher level of existence by starting over. By shifting your viewpoint. Sometimes you think everything will change when you move, forgetting that you take yourself with you, thus you need to discard defeatist thoughts, negative beliefs and self sabotaging actions to avoid creating a similar situation to the one you left. This card also can show up during the transition from life to death.
KEYWORDS: escape; detachment; move towards peace; transition; move forward; run away; listless; travel; spiritual guides

CAMOUFLAGE
You'd be surprised what poison is often hidden in the most beautiful camouflage.
― Evelyn Klebert
A vibrant cardinal peers through bushes, camouflaged by similar-colored leaves. Camouflage is a protective mechanism intended tp keep birds and animals safe from predators. Yet we humans have our own camouflage, our own ways of “staying safe” in this world, particularly when we feel vulnerable. The 7 WIND encourages flexibility, adaptability, and cunning– strategic thinking to get your needs met. It asks you to think in novel ways, opening to new approaches and perspectives. 7WIND energy works well for creative ventures, consultant work, and entrepreneurship, but it can be dysfunctional within a relationship, indicating evasive, self serving, “me first” energy that can lead to distrust and cynicism from the other partner who feels that “something is off.” It does not (always) mean outright lying–or cheating–but tells you that someone is holding back, not telling you the entire truth, usually for selfish reasons, or to avoid conflict. This card bodes well for getting your needs met when you are in survival mode, and for self employment or consultant work, but can be a form of escapism in which you avoid unpleasant truths and run away from responsibility rather than seeking helpful solutions.
KEYWORDS: avoidance; strategy; theft; rationalization; need for protection; quick thinking; adaptability; shady practices; deceit; lies; lack of transparency; evasion; scheming; get away with something; manipulation;

LIMITED THINKING
Thoughts carry you wherever you want to go. Weak thoughts don’t have the energy to carry you far!”
― Israelmore Ayivor
An orange maple leaf tries to fly free in the wind as part of its last dance before winter yet it gets trapped in a snowy cage of tangled branches. It’s stuck in place, almost paralyzed from moving forward. When the 8 WIND shows up, there is a good chance you are feeling the same way, in victim mode in some way. WIND is mental energy meaning that without realizing it, you may be engaging in self sabotage, creating inner restrictions that block progress. The obstacles you face in the world tend to mirror your inner world, your subconscious blocks and fears. Sometimes you set a goal and excitedly move towards it only to get stuck in negative thoughts; you overthink or overact, creating self induced obstacles that keep you stuck. Sometimes you encounter situations that tripped you in the past, and go to that place again in you mins, falling into “black hole” energy, which prevents movement. Yet it’s always possible to take your power back through strategic, “I can do it” thinking that cancels out inner rumination and negativity. It urges you to bypass thought, trusting your intuitive mind for solutions on moving forward. The 8 AIR also symbolizes illness.
KEYWORDS: cognitive dissonance; victimization; dependency; stuck; narrow thinking; restricted thinking; powerlessness; illness; restrictions; obstacles

FEAR
Man is not worried by real problems so much as by his imagined anxieties about real problems
― Epictetus
A winter-bare tree shrouded by red foliage presents a stark image to the viewer, symbolizing anxiety and fear. 9 WIND is all about fear and anxiety that can be paralyzing, awakening you in the night, or pushing you into flight, fight or freeze mode during the day. It’s an accumulation of negative thoughts in the basement of your mind, your old programs that say NONONO, trying to keep you safe by pushing away perceived danger. Some fear results from physical danger, but more often, its based on subjective concerns–from prior trauma to difficult circumstances and other inner blocks. Fear also present through physical symptoms, inertia, panic attacks, nightmares, vacillation, lack of clarity–you name it. The 9 WIND warns you of danger, screaming “things are going to get worse,” yet its typically a false alarm from the survival instinct within; it urges you to face your fears and work through them, finding strategies to push through primitive limvic system patterns that you hold you back from living your “best life” and manifesting your dreams.
KEYWORDS: anxiety, fear, nightmares, panic, worry, guilt, remorse, insomnia; cruelty ; unhappiness; despair; anxiety/panic disorder

DIFFICULT ENDING
It’s not just he best things that come to an end, but also the worst.
― Laura Imai Messina
Seen through the windshield on a rainy winter day, a winter tree at a highway construction sight appears covered in gloom. A sign of desolation. The WIND suit is linked to problems and obstacles. The 10 Wind shows up when an untenable situation finally falls apart. A situation, life chapter or relationship ends in a less than difficult way, causing misunderstandings, anger, betrayal, hurt, even major depression. When the 10 Wind shows up in a reading you are dealing with “rock bottom” energy. The sun will set for a bit, yes, leaving you in darkness, but sunlight will return as it always does. The 10 WIND asks you to avoid staying stuck in a black hole through a victim mentality or doom and gloom thinking. Monitor your storyline while opening to new opportunities. Life wants you to start over, building a new foundation out of the rubble. There is a way out of the darkness, even a new perspective, but for now, you have to process the pain to move forward and accept change, the only constant in this life, no matter how difficult.
KEYWORDS: end of situation; devastation; bad news; upset; sinkhole; inevitable ending
EARTH.. EARTH energy has a sensory basis: it can be seen, felt, smelled, and heard, and is practical and concrete, linked to money, work, health, property matters and everyday living. The EARTH cards indicate tangible results or efforts to make your life more secure in a stable, real-world way. EARTH energy indicates solid results or movement towards goals through diligence and hard work-practical effort. These cards are pragmatic, realistic and grounded, not pie in the sky. They represent structure, form and stability. Within a reading, EARTH cards indicate a strong foundation, security, even worldly power, yet they can be inflexible, stubborn and stuck-resistant to change. The solidity of the EARTH cards bodes well for end results, stability and solidity, which is great to see if you are working towards a goal, not so good for stuck behaviors, thoughts or situations

NEW OPPORTUNITY
When a great moment knocks on the door of your life, it is often no louder than the beating of your heart, and it is very easy to miss it.
― Boris Pasternak
Sunlight filtering through the forest creates a cascade of light–a prism-effect with red orbs that look tangible, like holiday ornaments.
An ACE is embryonic energy, a seed that needs to be planted for the potential within to manifest outwardly. Action is needed. In the 1 EARTH, this opportunity is real in a material sense, with pragmatic and practical potential. The “seed” of opportunity can be a new job opportunity or the raw materials to create something solid. It can be the start of a relationship with shared goals, a check in the mail, a new purchase, including a home, even a solid idea that can be fleshed out and made real. Again, effort is needed for this opportunity to develop; EARTH energy is all about producing, creating, building, adding on–making something that has form and structure;. It also asks you to pay attention to your health, to stay grounded and mindful, present in the real world rather than stuck in your head, or running on automatic.
